I am an enthusiastic baseball fan. Since my retirement as a librarian, I have been working in the concessions stand for Minor League Baseball’s Class A Advanced San Jose Giants. As part of this experience I have become fascinated by the history, tradition and evolution of ballpark food.
Many articles and other ephemeral material have been written about the great tradition of baseball and food, and there are frequent mentions of food in baseball books. However, a search of amazon.com, link+ (a database containing the holdings of many academic and public libraries), and ABNER (the online catalog of the Giamatti Research Center at the Baseball Hall of Fame) showed that a book dedicated to this topic did not exist. This led me to the further research that resulted in the publication of The Joy of Ballpark Food: From Hot Dogs to Haute Cuisine.
The free time afforded by retirement gave me the opportunity to volunteer at Second Harvest Food Bank and thus become aware first-hand of the need to help our neighbors who do not have adequate food.
My interest in the connection between baseball and food plus my concern for those in need of food led me to create The Joy of Ballpark Food: From Hot Dogs to Haute Cuisine as a fundraiser for Second Harvest Food Bank. All of the royalties from the sale of The Joy of Ballpark Food: From Hot Dogs to Haute Cuisine are being donated to Second Harvest Food Bank.
In addition to promoting the book, ballparkfood.org encourages fans to donate directly to Second Harvest Food Bank. Donations can be made in honor of your favorite ballpark food.
Thank you for visiting ballparkfood.org.
